Wedding Planning Is Simply The Art of Paying Attention
There are a multitude factors involved in Wedding Planning. I don’t need to list them out, I reckon you already know BUT to strip it all back; Wedding Planning is simply the art of paying attention.
I’m not talking about hearing what colours you’re saying on a consult call or how many Bridesmaid bouquets you’re ticking in a questionnaire.
There’s paying attention to the things that are said.
And the things that aren't.
Paying attention to a couple's story, the way they talk about their family, the places that mean something to them and the things that make them light up.
Paying attention to how people move through a space. Where they naturally gather. Where they linger. What makes them comfortable. What makes them feel connected.
Paying attention to the light at a particular time of day, the way a property feels as the sun begins to set, and what a space is already telling you before you've added a single thing to it.
Because great wedding planning isn't simply about making a list and working your way through it.
It's about noticing. Listening beyond the words.
A couple might say they want a relaxed wedding. But what does relaxed actually mean to them?
Perhaps it means a long lunch that isn't rushed. Perhaps it means no formalities and music playing while dinner continues late into the evening.
Or maybe it’s being able to disappear for twenty minutes with their closest friends without worrying about what's happening elsewhere.
The words in a Zoom meeting are only the beginning.
The meaning is found in the details.
And sometimes the most useful things a couple tell me aren't even answers to a particular question.
They're the stories that come up naturally in conversation.
How they went on a road trip and found THE best steak sandwich of their lives but can’t for the life of them remember exactly where it was. (i’m hearing that and thinking we’ll track it down and include steak sandwiches as their late night snack)
The profile pic of them with their dog Reggie.
I’m seeing that and noting when and how to include him in their ceremony. Even though they haven’t mentioned him.
How the Groom-to-be notoriously always wins a meat tray raffle at the pub and his best mate always misses out.
I’m noting down a surprise raffle after speeches to bring the energy back up before the dance floor opens.
When the couple says they’re not really cake people. But mentioned sticky date pudding and lemon meringue pie are their go-to dessert orders.
I’m about to email their caterer to add sticky date to the dessert menu and reach out to a patisserie to order a large lemon meringue pie they can torch the top of as their their ‘cake cutting’ moment.
Or when they tell me they met playing Cards Against Humanity.
I’m immediately thinking we’ll create their own CAH game and have these as place cards for fun ice-breakers as guests take their seats at the dinner table.
All of those are true stories. And real examples of what we designed and planned for those couples.
And when I validated we could do it, I had so much fun presenting these concepts to them in their own video walk-through. And the feedback made my day.
They instantly had that spark and excitement for their wedding and loved how we were able to bring a bit of them in to their day like that.
A wedding is, after all, a gathering of people. Not a collection of styling elements. Not a Pinterest board brought to life.
People.
The couple.
Their families.
Their friends.
So when you have a Planner and Vendors who pay attention to the people, that is where the magic of it all begins.
The rest is just the unfolding of all those ideas and experiences.
If you’re planning a wedding anywhere in regional Australia and want to connect, I’d love to have that conversation.
